Las Cruces – A new scholarship at Dona Ana Community College (DACC) will keep future criminal justice and law enforcement students on the path to graduation and then to work.
The Third Judicial District Adult Drug Court and the New Mexico State University Foundation have established the Adult Drug Court Program Current Use Scholarship for students at the community college enrolled in criminal justice or law enforcement. Once graduated, the drug court encourages these young professionals to join the fight against substance and alcohol abuse issues throughout their careers.
“It is our goal that this scholarship will encourage students to continue their education and complete their degree,” Adult Drug Court Program Manager David Borunda said. “We especially want to reach out to students who have been victims of or had issues with drug or alcohol abuse to apply for this scholarship, because they know the price families and our society pay for substance abuse.” “This is one way we can give back to the community that will have a positive impact,” Borunda added.
The drug court is the most effective intervention for treating those addicted to drugs according to the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP). It is considered to be a problem solving court through their intensive court-based treatment program, which reduces repeat offenders, restores individual to living healthy sober lives and positively impacts families. The court reduces drug use among clients, reduces crime, saves money and reunites families according to NADCP.
Oftentimes this court is the last chance for clients with substance abuse issues.
