Screening Of Film By NMSU Professor In Las Cruces

ilana lapid

LAS CRUCES -- On Saturday, September 24, the Temple Beth-El Mensch Club will present a screening of Ilana Lapid’s short movie, “Yochi”, at 7:30 pm, at Temple Beth-El, 3980 Sonoma Springs Avenue, Las Cruces.

The movie was written and directed by filmmaker and New Mexico State University assistant professor Ilana Lapid, who will appear after the showing to answer any questions.  At the showing donations will be accepted to complete costs of the post- production of the film.

The approximately 25-minute film was shot entirely in Belize, using local amateur actors, and was written and directed by Lapid.  The title character is an olive-eyed, 9-year-old, selectively mute Mayan boy who guards a nest of endangered yellow-headed parrots in the pine savannah of western Belize. When Yochi discovers his older brother Itza is poaching to pay debts, his loyalties are put to the test.

The movie will be shown immediately after the Havdalah service, and will be followed by refreshments and a brief Selichot service to mark the approach of the Jewish High Holy Days.

More information about the film can be found on its website – http://yochifilm.com/ or on Facebook  at: Yochifilm.
