Secretary Of State Wants Critics' E-Mails

By KRWG News

New Mexico – Secretary of State Mary Herrera submitted public records requests seeking e-mail involving county elections officials who have been critical of her office.

Herrera said Friday her requests were made "as a private citizen not as an elected official." However, Herrera did not answer a question why she had submitted the requests to Dona Ana and Los Alamos counties.

One request sought e-mail sent in July between a Dona Ana County clerk's office official and Los Alamos County Chief Deputy Clerk Sheryl Nichols, who is president of a county clerks group affiliated with the New Mexico Association of Counties. Another records request sought e-mail between Nichols and others, including former state elections bureau Denise Lamb and secretary of state staff.
