Sheriff's Departent Offers Unique Use Of Force Class, Interactive Scenario

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department will offer a unique, one-day class to educate the public on the use of force in police work, and the split-second decisions law enforcement officers are trained to make in potentially deadly situations.

The class is free and open to the public. Due to the subject matter, the class is limited to the first 25 people who apply.

“In light of recent, highly-publicized police shootings, it’s imperative that the public has an opportunity to understand how police are trained, and how the federal judiciary views the use of force by law enforcement,” said Detective Lawrence Louick, who will present the class along with Major Brent Barlow of the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Louick, a shoot/don’t shoot simulated scenario will also be presented to participants, along with detailed information on the various classes and curriculum law enforcement officers are required to learn.

“Law Enforcement Use of Force: What the Community Needs to Know” will be hosted at the DASO main headquarters, 845 N. Motel Boulevard, on Saturday, July 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
