Sheriff's Office Warns Of Phone Scam

Dona Ana County Sheriff

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a recent telephone scam that attempts to collect money for bogus warrants.

About a dozen victims have reported the scam to the sheriff’s office in the last week. The victims all report the same nature of the call: a person falsely identifies themselves as a member of the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, telling the victim that there is an outstanding warrant for their arrest. In order to clear the warrant, the victim is told to deposit money into a Pay Pal account.

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office does not contact people by phone regarding outstanding warrants. Anyone who has a warrant for their arrest will be told in person by a uniformed deputy.

If anyone is contacted regarding an outstanding warrant over the phone, you are asked to report it in person to the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office main headquarters at 845 N. Motel Boulevard. Investigators ask that you collect as much information as you can, such as the phone number of the person calling you, and/or the name of the person making contact.
