Shiprock Man On Trial Pleads Not Guilty To Killing Brother With Ax

A northwestern New Mexico man who authorities said killed his brother with an ax has pleaded not guilty.

The Gallup Independent reports that Charley Joe Jr., of Shiprock, entered his plea Wednesday before a federal magistrate judge in Albuquerque.

According to investigators, Joe killed his brother with an ax in August following an argument over property. Authorities say Joe lived in a hogan next to the brother's home on the Navajo Nation.

Joe was arrested at the Shiprock Chapter House where he was attending a meeting of family members discussing funeral arrangements for brother.

No trial date has been scheduled.
