Silver City councilors are considering a proposal that would give the town a stronger driving-while-texting law than the recently passed state version.
The proposed measure calls for drivers to be fined $100 for texting while driving regardless of how many times motorists violate the state law.
State law prohibit drivers from sending or reading text messages and emails, or making Internet searches from smartphones or other hand-held wireless devices. There would be a $25 fine for a first violation and $50 for subsequent violations.
Councilor repealed this week it old ordinance on texting because it was in conflict with the new state law.
