Silver Fire Reaches Evacuated Village; Buildings Saved

A fire in southern New Mexico has reached the historic mining town of Kingston but a fire management team spokesman says crews have protected buildings and that none have burned.

The lightning-caused Silver fire is burning in a rugged area of the Gila National Forest west of Hillsborn. It had burned more than 29 square miles as of Thursday, with containment put at zero.

Fire management team spokesman Kevin Bailey says the fire continues to grow and that the fire reached Kingston by early Thursday.

He says crews protected the village's several dozen buildings by wrapping them with fire-resistant material and by reducing burnable fuel around the buildings.

The village's 45 or so residents evacuated earlier this week.
