Santiago, Mexico – Mexican authorities say six police officers have been arrested in the killing of a mayor in the northern state of Nuevo Leon.
Nuevo Leon state Attorney General Alejandro Garza y Garza says the suspects include the security guard of Mayor Edelmiro Cavazos.
Garza y Garza announced the arrests Friday. Investigators are pursuing other leads.
Cavazos' body was found Wednesday outside his town of Santiago, a weekend getaway for residents of the industrial city of Monterrey. He was kidnapped from his home on Sunday along with the guard, who was later let free.
Mauricio Fernandez, mayor of another town on the outskirts of Monterrey, said Cavazos had received death threats from gangs warning him to stay out of their way.
