Socorro, Texas Officials Accused Of Theft

A Socorro city official and a police officer have been indicted on state felony theft charges.  Socorro City Council member Jesus "Jesse" Gandara Jr. and police Sgt. Refugio Orta were indicted Thursday.

The indictment accuses Gandara and Orta of stealing property worth between $1,500 and $20,000 and misapplying fiduciary property worth more than $1,500 between June 2011 and January 2012.

El Paso County sheriff's Deputy Stephen Juarez says Orta surrendered Friday and was released Saturday after posting $10,000 bond. Juarez found no information on an attorney in jail records.

Juarez said he found no record of Gandara's arrest.

The investigation began after councilmember Maria Reyes filed a complaint with the sheriff's office.
