Some Say Industry Arrogance Fueled Fracking Anger

The boom in oil and gas fracking has led to jobs, billions in royalties and profits, and even some environmental gains.

But some experts say arrogance, a lack of transparency and poor communication on the part of the drilling industry have helped fuel public anger over the process of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

Former Shell Oil Co. President John Hofmeister says it's been a mistake for some in the industry to suggest that gas wells never cause problems. Hofmeister says the industry has a very good safety record but not a perfect one.

Penn State geologist Terry Engelder says the Marcellus Shale drilling boom in the East has brought many benefits but can never be risk-free.

Fracking is also a major concern in New Mexico and Texas, where it is increasingly used for drilling.
