Texas lawmakers and top business leaders are vowing to kill two proposed amendments to the state's existing religious freedom law that they say will promote discrimination and possibly result in backlash similar to what happened in Indiana and Arkansas.
Opponents say the amendments, by Republicans Rep. Matt Krause and Sen. Donna Campbell, would modify Texas' Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1999. That includes removing provisions crafted to prevent discrimination.
Dallas Democratic Rep. Rafael Anchia said Tuesday that there's a bipartisan group of legislators who "will stop these bills in the House."
Texas Association of Business' Chief Executive Officer Bill Hammond called the GOP-backed measures "misguided legislation."
Hammond said he is "seeing support evaporate" after the new laws in Indiana and Arkansas attracted vociferous opposition and calls for boycotts.
