RIAS Berlin was a legendary voice in Germany’s broadcasting landscape from 1946 through 1993.
The radio station was established by the U.S. Government, and while it stopped broadcasting in 1993, the name RIAS Berlin continued with a new mission, a journalist exchange program.
Twice a year, American journalists travel to Germany and German journalists come to the United States.
I participated in the program in 2005 and since then, I’ve hosted German journalists here in New Mexico and in my previous position as a news director in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Recently, I welcomed Berlin freelance radio journalist Sonja Gerth to KRWG and New Mexico and I had an opportunity to speak with her for this episode of Images.
