Spaceport Gets NM OK For Visitor Center Loan

Spaceport America

Spaceport America has state authorization to obtain a nearly $21 million private loan to finance construction of two visitor centers in southern New Mexico.

Executive Director Christine Anderson says the planned construction of financially self-sustaining visitors projected to draw 200,000 visitors annually is a key part of Spaceport America's business model.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that Gov. Susana Martinez and other members of the state Board of Finance voted unanimously Wednesday to authorize the loan.

Spaceport America says construction should begin soon after the loan is obtained in about a month.

One of the visitor centers would be built at Spaceport America itself. A smaller one would be built near Truth or Consequences, a location that is hoped would draw the notice of passing motorists.
