06.06.12 (LAS CRUCES) -- There is taskforce working to improve education statewide.  The group providing guidance to Governor Susana Martinez includes Las Cruces Public Schools Superintendent Stan Rounds.

The United States Department of Education is requiring New Mexico develop a new teacher and principal effectiveness evaluation system after it granted the state a waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind Act earlier this year.

"We know that the evaluation system needs to be tied to how things are happening in the classroom. The parts that are in this, a good part of it, is around student performance. Are students improving and getting better at a rate that's acceptable so they can be successful at their end and time of school," said Stan Rounds.

Las Cruces Public Schools Superintendent Stan Rounds is one of three superintendent in the state, taking part in the taskforce.

"I'm lucky to be appointed to this committee and I appreciate that opportunity, it's important to me that the Las Cruces Public Schools is well represented," he said.

The group will focus on the developing a revised teacher and principal evaluation process for the state of New Mexico.

"The current system as with any system including the new one that will come on isn't perfect and so the current system has one feature that has a lot of debate and I agree with the new thinking. It was simply a past/fail, either we're doing the job or you weren't," he said.

The pilot evaluation system will be put in place this August just in time for the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.

"Here in Las Cruces we're doing our job of quality education. We're trying to stay at the forefront of what's going on and we want to understand all the parts because your kids reserve the best when they are in my classroom," he said.
