State Education Auditors At West Texas District

State auditors have begun reviewing whether some educators at a West Texas school district cheated on federal accountability standards.

The El Paso Times reported Friday that auditors from the Texas Education Agency interviewed employees at the Canutillo Independent School District, which is cooperating. Auditors on hand Tuesday through Thursday also gathered documents on compliance numbers.

A TEA spokeswoman says it's not known when a preliminary report will be finished.

An earlier internal audit alleged superintendent Damon Murphy, who's on paid leave and out of job Feb. 1, raised questions about how some students were reclassified.

Murphy once was an associate superintendent in the El Paso Independent School District, where ex-superintendent Lorenzo Garcia pleaded guilty in a cheating scandal. Garcia must serve more than three years in prison.
