State Worker Not Permitted To Run For Office

A state employee has been told she can't run for elective office in Santa Fe County, so incumbent Commissioner Robert Anaya won't face a challenger in the June primary as he seeks another four-year term.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that Camilla Bustamante is withdrawing from the race because the state Personnel Office told her that running would violate a law that bars political activities of public employees whose work is connected to federally funded programs.

Bustamante is a state Department of Health employee whose job as a planning and resource manager is funded by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Bustamante previously qualified to be on the June ballot. She says she's disappointed she can't run to serve her community without giving up her job.
