Steady Growth On Pinon Fire

The Pinon Fire continued spreading at a moderate rate as it reached 600 acres on the Reserve Ranger District Friday. The lightning-caused fire started Tuesday, June 16 east of Eagle Peak and is being managed to achieve multiple resource objectives. Some of the objectives managers have identified for this incident include protecting cultural resources and livestock forage in the area and improving wildlife habitat.

About 15 personnel – including three engines – are assigned to the incident and working along Forest Road 94 to establish the western boundary of the fire. Fire activity was characterized as low to moderate, moving primarily north, northeast through ponderosa pine, oak and mixed conifer.

Continental Divide Trail hikers are advised of fire activity around a portion of the trail east of Eagle Peak. Signs are posted on the south at County Road B054 (commonly known as Y Canyon Rd.) and Forest Road 4047,  just west of Ghost Lake and on the north at Forest Road 3070 (or Long Canyon Rd) and the 94 Road (or 5 Springs Divide). The alternate route is the 94 Road.

The forecast remains the same with hot temperatures, partly cloudy skies and the potential for showers.
