Strong Families Applauds Decision to Move Forward with Planning Paid Parental Leave Program in NM

Rep. Damon Ely

Commentary: Strong Families New Mexico (SFNM) on Wednesday applauded the House Health and Human Services Committee’s unanimous support of HM 4, Rep. Daymon Ely’s memorial to continue the already successful planning process for a statewide paid parental leave program in New Mexico.

“Giving parents and other guardians the time to be with their kids—without fear of losing their jobs or their income—is the right thing for our families,” said Adriann Barboa, SFNM field director. “We know that children thrive when their families have access to paid parental leave. Healthy kids and healthy families mean a healthy New Mexico.”

The memorial, which received a unanimous do-pass from the Health Committee on Wednesday, authorizes the Parental Paid Leave Working Group to continue its work toward launching a pilot parental paid-leave program in New Mexico in 2020. The working group will report on its progress to the Interim Legislative Health and Human Services Committee before the end of this year.

HM 4 now goes to the House floor for consideration by the full House of Representatives.
