Sunland Park Election May Be Cancelled

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico officials are considering canceling upcoming elections for a troubled border city where three employees face charges in connection to a secret video recording of a mayoral candidate getting a lap dance.

Third Judicial District Attorney Amy Orlando told The Las Cruces Sun-News (http://bit.ly/AlwGAq ) on Wednesday that she and Secretary of State Dianna Duran have discussed possibly canceling Sunland Park's election scheduled for next week.

Duran was in Sunland Park this week to investigate possible election violations. Officials say a motion has been filed in district court explaining the reasons for postponing or calling off the election.

Three city employees, including mayoral candidate and mayor pro tem Daniel Salinas, face charges related to an alleged extortion case involving the secret digital recording of an opponent.
