Sunland Park Receives State Funding for Waste Tire Collection

Funds from the New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED) and the New Mexico Tourism Department (NMTD) will give Sunland Park residents the opportunity to discard their old tires, rather than disposing of them illegally.

The NMED Solid Waste Bureau and NM Tourism Department will disperse over $50,000 to the City of Sunland Park via, NMED’sRecycling and Illegal Dumping (RAID) grant and NMTD’s NM Clean and Beautiful grant.

This money will allow the city to host tire collection events, restore Sunland Park’s historic Elena Park and provide educational recycling outreach efforts. This makes it convenient for residents to drop off old regular sized tires at a selected site free of charge where they will be shredded and recycled for other possible uses such as road resurfacing or erosion control.

“We have a beautiful city here in Sunland Park, and these grants help ensure our city keeps shining. Seeing callously discarded old tires makes even the best cities give the wrong impression.  I am extremely proud of the city’s hard-working staff for achieving these grant awards. By providing these services and making the people of Sunland Park aware of their benefits, we should see a decline in illegal dumping throughout the city.” Said City Manager Bob Gallagher – City of Sunland Park.
