Suspect Arrested In Berino Shooting

The 16-year-old suspect who was implicated in a shooting that left several people injured surrendered voluntarily Wednesday to detectives at the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department, accompanied by his parents and attorney.

The incident happened Jan. 23 in Berino. According to sheriff’s detectives, Alberto Fierro Gamboa, 16, is alleged to have been armed with a rifle and fired several rounds during a verbal altercation between two women who were at a house party in the 100 block of Feathergrass.

Gamboa, according to an arrest warrant, is charged with four counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon causing great bodily harm, six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of shooting at a motor vehicle.

During the investigation, detectives learned that a 34-year-old woman drove to the residence just before 7 p.m. with five other people in her car. One of the female passengers, 21, reportedly got out of the vehicle and began arguing with another woman who was at the party. During the argument, Gamboa allegedly went into the house and returned, brandishing a rifle. According to witnesses, he fired one round into the ground.

The 21-year-old woman reportedly returned to the vehicle. As the vehicle was leaving, Gamboa allegedly gave chase on foot and fired two additional rounds, one of which hit the 34-year-old driver in the back. Another round reportedly shattered the rear windshield.

The driver was transported to an El Paso-area hospital, where she was treated and released.  At least three other people received superficial shrapnel wounds.

Gamboa was transported to the Doña Ana County Juvenile Detention Center where he is being held without bond, pending a detention hearing set for Thursday morning at Third Judicial District Court.
