Suspect In Las Cruces Domestic Assault Arrested

Jesus Garcia, the 21-year-old man suspected of physically assaulting his girlfriend and forcing her to nearly crash during a rolling domestic on Tuesday, turned himself in to police last night.

Garcia, of the 100 block of Cinnabar Lane, is charged with one count each of aggravated battery against a household member, battery against a household member and criminal damage to property. Officers detained Garcia Wednesday evening when he arrived at the Las Cruces Police Department to turn himself in.

Detectives learned that sometime late Tuesday evening, Garcia asked his 23-year-old girlfriend to give him a ride to the Dona Ana County Detention Center so he could turn himself in on outstanding warrants. Garcia’s warrants are related to a previous battery against another woman.

The 23-year-old woman told detectives that while they traveling north on Main Street, they got into an argument. As the woman’s vehicle approached University Avenue, Garcia is alleged to have placed his hands on the woman’s neck and began to strangle her.

The woman told detectives that she nearly crashed the vehicle.

Garcia is alleged to have grasped his girlfriend’s neck a second time, forcing the woman to nearly lose consciousness. The woman subsequently turned the vehicle around and drove Garcia back to his mother’s home. Garcia was last seen getting into the passenger side of a white car with tinted windows.

Garcia was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is being held on cash-only bond set at $25,000.
