Suspect in Las Cruces Shooting Charged with Attempted Murder

The 69-year-old Las Cruces man suspected in Thursday evening’s shooting that resulted in the hospitalization of a plumber and a two-hour standoff on Gladys Drive has been charged with attempted murder.

John T. Haynie, of the 1600 block of Gladys Drive, is charged with one count of attempted murder. The charge is a second-degree felony count.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday, March 31, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the 1600 block of Gladys Drive where a 54-year-old man was suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen. First responders tended to the man’s injuries before he was transported to University Medical Center of El Paso.

On Friday, he remained hospitalized in El Paso though his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Officers learned that the victim is a plumber for Roto-Rooter and was at the apartment working on a sink when, for some unknown reason, Haynie shot him. The victim left the apartment and called 911 while attempting to drive away. Officers located him in his Roto-Rooter van near the intersection of Gladys and Missouri Avenue.

Police attempted to make contact with Haynie who was inside his apartment and still believed to be armed. LCPD’s SWAT and Hostage Negotiation teams were called out and, shortly after 8 p.m. were successful in making contact with Haynie.

He was taken into custody and transported to Memorial Medical Center for observation. Investigators believe Haynie was intoxicated at the time of the shooting. Police located a .22 caliber revolver in Haynie’s apartment.

Haynie was subsequently booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bond.
