Suspect In Shooting Arrested

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police have arrested the man responsible for a shooting that occurred at a party early Saturday morning.

Eric Torres, 20, of the 1900 block of Embassy Drive, is charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of shooting at or from a motor vehicle, one count of shooting at a dwelling or occupied building, and one count of tampering with evidence.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, police were dispatched to the 100 block of Ridgecrest Street where several shots were fired after Torres was kicked out of a party. Police learned that Torres was intoxicated at the party and was asked to leave by several party-goers.

Witnesses told police that Torres became combative as he was being escorted out of the party. Detectives learned that Torres then armed himself with a handgun and, as he was being driven away, began firing shots toward the home and at vehicles parked nearby.

Three vehicles were hit by gunfire and two young women inside one of the cars were struck by flying debris. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment of relatively minor cuts. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Torres is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $70,000. The investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.
