Suspect Sought In Metal Theft

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators have obtained a warrant for the arrest of a Chaparral man wanted for allegedly stealing scrap metal and vehicle parts.

On Dec. 20, 2013, a Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol in the 400 block of Chaparral noticed a group of men standing near a pickup truck loaded with scrap metal. After making contact with the men, the deputy determined the scrap metal and various vehicle parts did not belong to any of the individuals.

During an investigation, Lorenzo Cano, 20, reportedly admitted to stealing the metal after climbing a six-foot tall chain link fence into the neighboring property. Cano told deputies he intended to take the scrap metal to a recycling plant to exchange for cash.

Deputies in Chaparral have seen a spike in the number of metal theft cases in recent months. It is unknown at this time if Cano is connected to any of those investigations.

A warrant has been issued for Cano’s arrest, charging him with residential burglary. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, (575) 525-1911. Anonymous tips can also be made by calling Crime Stoppers, (800) 222-TIPS or via text message to CRIMES (274637) using the keyword LCTIPS.
