Texas – The longtime custodians of the Alamo are expected in Austin amid a state investigation into their care of the revered Texas landmark.
Leaders of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas were scheduled Wednesday to appear before a Texas House committee. The century-old nonprofit has been under investigation since last year by the Texas attorney general's office.
The inquiry began after a former DRT member accused the group of mismanagement and failing to properly maintain the Alamo. Results of the investigation have not been released.
The Daughters have been the caretakers of the Alamo since 1905. That's when the Legislature gave the group stewardship of the famous 1836 battle ground where an outnumbered band of Texans made a legendary stand before Mexican forces seized the mission.
