Testimony In Senator's Corruption Case Focuses On Fraud

nmlegis.gov

A determination is drawing closer on whether former New Mexico state Sen. Phil Griego should stand trial on corruption charges.

State prosecutors and a defense attorney for Griego honed in Friday on evidence related to fraud and bribery charges during a fourth day of evidentiary hearings, as they called state officials, lawmakers and a real estate attorney to testify.

Prosecutors allege that Griego used his position as a state senator to profit from the sale of a state-owned building in downtown Santa Fe, pushing the sale through the Legislature without disclosing his personal interest. Defense attorney Thomas Clark is highlighting testimony that Greigo's role as a real estate broker in the land deal was known by some state officials and lawmakers.
