Texas AG Running For Governor

Long-serving Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott kicked off his 2014 campaign for governor with a Sunday event in San Antonio.

The Republican already has raised a formidable nearly $23 million. Gov. Rick Perry says he won't seek a fourth full term — giving Abbott a clear road to the GOP nomination.

In office since 2002, Abbott is popular among mainstream Republicans and tea party activists. He brags about suing the federal government on Texas' behalf 27 times under President Barack Obama.

The only other announced candidate is longshot and former Texas Republican Party Chairman Tom Pauken.

No Democrat has declared, though some have urged state Sen. Wendy Davis — famous for her filibuster to stall passage of sweeping new abortion limits in the state Legislature — to run.
