Texas Approves Radioactive Waste Shipments
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas officials have given final approval to allowing low-level radioactive waste from 38 states to be brought to a Texas burial dump near the New Mexico border.
State lawmakers had already approved bringing the waste to the Texas site. The Texas Low-Level Radioactive Compact Commission voted unanimously Friday to approve final rule changes.
Environmentalists say trucking the waste on state highways is dangerous and fear the burial site could lead to underground water contamination.
Dallas-based Waste Control Specialists insists the site near Andrews is safe and that accidents moving the low-level radioactive waste are infrequent. A company official said shipments could start in May.
