Texas Court Says Dogs Have Sentimental Value

By KRWG News

Texas – A Texas couple which had sued to recover their dog's sentimental value after the 8-year-old Labrador mixed breed was accidentally euthanized by an animal shelter has had their lawsuit reinstated by an appeals court.

The couple's attorney, Randy Turner, said the case is important for pet owners in Texas because the ruling marks the first time in the state's legal history that an appeals court has allowed a dog owner to recover sentimental value damages for a pet's death.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports (http://bit.ly/uXfz67 ) the lawsuit by Jeremy and Katherine Medlen had initially been dismissed by a Fort Worth judge who had denied their claim for their dog Avery.

The dog was accidentally euthanized after it escaped from the couple's home in June 2009.
