The Texas Board of Education has again voted to drop algebra II as a requirement for high school graduation, beginning to hammer out implementation of a major academic curriculum overhaul.
Eliminating the algebra II mandate for most students was part of a sweeping law approved overwhelmingly in May by the state Legislature.
It's meant to give students more flexibility to focus on career and vocational training — not just college prep courses.
The board cast a similar vote in November. It still must provide final approval to the new curriculum standards on Friday.
That last vote is usually procedural, though the board can still make late changes.
Critics say the law is watering down curriculum. But supporters contend it will help Texas schools meet the demands of the modern workforce.
