Texas – Texas Gov. Rick Perry says a climate bill being debated in Congress is "draconian" and would cost the state thousands of jobs in the energy sector.
Perry expressed his opposition to the bill at a meeting Wednesday in Houston with business leaders and state lawmakers.
Most Republicans like Perry have voiced strong opposition to the Waxman-Markey climate and energy bill, which the House passed in June. The Senate's working on its own version of the bill.
The bill includes an economy-wide cap-and-trade system that would require power plants, industrial facilities and refineries to cut carbon dioxide and other climate changing pollution. GOP leaders say the bill is simply a massive energy tax on consumers.
