Texas Health Commission Attorney Resigns Amid Probe

The state health commission's top attorney has resigned amid questions raised by a newspaper investigation into his ties with an Austin technology company to which he steered $110 million in no-bid contracts.

Jack Stick resigned Friday as chief counsel for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. That's after officials concluded the contracts with the data analytics firm 21CT was awarded unfairly.

Kyle Janek, the agency's executive commissioner, canceled the contract with 21CT on Friday after raising questions over how the agency made those agreements.

Stick tendered his resignation and Janek canceled the contract one day after the newspaper submitted several questions about the awarding of a $20 million contract to 21CT in 2012 and a pending $90 million extension while skirting state procurement laws.
