Texas Helps Pay Final Costs For Ten Dead In Prison Bus Wreck

Texas will pay up to $6,000 in final expenses for two guards and eight inmates killed when a prison bus went off an icy highway and hit a freight train.

The funds for funerals and burial are available through the State Office of Risk Management.

A guard and four inmates survived Wednesday's crash on Interstate 20 in Penwell, west of Odessa.

Officer Jason Self remained in critical condition Saturday at a Lubbock hospital. Four inmates were at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, with two in critical condition, one upgraded to serious condition and another listed as fair.

A funeral will be held Monday in Abilene for Texas Department of Criminal Justice Officer Christopher Davis. Officer Eligio Garcia's funeral is Jan. 24, also in Abilene.
