A top deputy at Texas' massive state health agency who was granted nearly $100,000 to pay for his graduate school tuition has resigned.
Texas Health and Human Services Commissioner Kyle Janek's deputy chief of staff Casey Haney resigned Friday after it was reported the commission had paid his tuition for a master's degree in business in one lump sum, a violation of state policy.
Haney is the fourth high-profile employee to resign in the past month. The other three — former Commission chief of staff Erica Stick, former chief counsel Jack Stick and former Inspector General Doug Wilson — stepped down amid scrutiny over lucrative, no-bid contracts to Austin tech company 21CT.
Executives with 21CT have defended the agreement. Prosecutors are reviewing the deal.
