Texas Prisoner Approved To Start Hormone Therapy

The attorney for a Texas inmate says the federal prison system has approved her client's request to begin hormone therapy to transition into becoming a man.

Moira Meltzer-Cohen says 52-year-old Marius Mason, a prisoner at the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth, is awaiting the medications he will need to start developing male characteristics.

Meltzer-Cohen tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (http://bit.ly/2bMlG13 ) that Mason will undergo the first female-to-male transition in the federal prison system.

Bureau of Prison officials declined to comment on Mason's gender transition, stating that an inmate's health information is not public information.

Mason was diagnosed in 2013 with gender dysphoria.

Mason was convicted of arson in 2009 and sentenced to 22 years for burning down a Monsanto laboratory on the Michigan State University campus in 1999.
