Texas School Plan

By KRWG News

Texas – School districts in cash-strapped Texas could have bigger classes, cut employee pay and wait until the end of the academic year to notify teachers that contracts won't be renewed under legislation being pushed by Republican state House members.

GOP House leaders are calling the bill by Rep. Rob Eissler a way to save Texas schools facing huge financial burdens.

Some teacher groups are calling it an attack that will result in severe pay cuts and make it easier to fire teachers.

In addition to salary cuts, the bill would allow for unpaid furlough days for teachers. It would also repeal the state-mandated teacher salary schedule.

Currently, districts must notify teachers about contract renewal 45 days before the end of the school year.
