AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas Supreme Court advisory board has begun debating forms aiming to make it easier and less expensive for poor Texans to get divorced.
Board members on Friday heard testimony from proponents who say it will make the legal system more accessible.
They also heard from attorneys' groups who argue family law is too complicated for those without a lawyer to manage.
A court task force has drawn up proposed forms, but the State Bar of Texas has opposed them.
It's not clear if the full advisory board will vote to recommend approving the forms.
The Supreme Court will then consider the proposed forms, but it is not bound by any decision made by the board.
