Texas saw its percentage of residents without health insurance fall 3 points to 19.1 percent — but the state still has the nation's highest uninsured rate.
U.S. Census Bureau data released Wednesday shows about 5 million Texans were uninsured in 2014, down 701,000 from the previous year.
But that's still the nation's highest percentage of residents without health insurance, outpacing other top five-finishers Alaska, Florida, Georgia and Oklahoma.
Nationwide, about 12 percent of people are uninsured.
Texas also now leads the country in total number of people without health insurance, outpacing California, whose total fell to 4.8 million in 2014.
Texas refused to expand Medicaid coverage under the White House's signature health care law. But 1 million-plus Texans signed up for health insurance coverage via a federally run online exchange.
