Thieves in southwestern New Mexico are targeting custom high-end tailgates on GM pickup trucks.
Police Chief Brandon Gigante tells the Deming Headlight there have been four such thefts in Deming in the past month.
The most recent one involved a $1,000 tailgate stolen from an early 2000s model GMC parked at a home.
Auto-parts store managers say there are special locks that can be installed for tailgates.
