Three Charged In Shooting And Attempted Narcotics Theft

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police have charged two adults and one juvenile for their involvement in a Monday morning attempted robbery of marijuana that resulted in gunfire and injuries to one of the suspects.

Scott A. Perez, 18, Adrianna Rae Sanchez, 20, and 17-year-old Michael R. Wood are charged with one count each of attempted robbery and conspiracy. Perez and Sanchez also face one count each of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Perez was shot at least once in his upper chest and driven to Mountain View Regional Medical Center. He was subsequently flown to University Medical Center of El Paso but his injuries do not appear to be life threatening. Perez was uncooperative with officers while Sanchez and Wood both initially gave conflicting statements to police.

Las Cruces Police detectives learned that Perez, his girlfriend Sanchez and Wood were at a residence on Juniper Avenue early Monday morning where they discussed obtaining some marijuana. At around 2 a.m. Sanchez began communicating via cellular phone text messages with a 19-year-old about purchasing some marijuana.

Sanchez arranged to meet the 19-year-old at his home on the 3700 block of Jade Avenue under the guise of purchasing marijuana. Detectives later learned, however, that the three suspects did not have any cash to make a purchase and instead went to the victim's home with the intent of stealing marijuana and whatever cash the victim might have.

Police learned that when the victim went outside to sell marijuana to Sanchez, Perez and Wood jumped him. The victim escaped his attackers, ran inside his home, armed himself with a handgun and fired several rounds causing Perez and Wood to flee. Perez was struck in the upper chest by one round fired from the victim's handgun.

Sanchez and Wood were arrested Monday morning while Perez remains at UMC. No charges have been filed against the victim. Police are continuing their investigation.
