A thunderstorm that's forecast to bring heavy rainfall in New Mexico beginning on Sunday night is expected to pose a risk for flash flooding, especially in areas hard hit by wildfires.
The National Weather Service says the storm is expected to bring rainfall from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains into the northeast highlands of New Mexico on Sunday, spread to the central mountain chain Monday morning and move into western New Mexico by Monday evening.
A flash flood watch was in effect Sunday for the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and northeast highlands.
The possibility of flash flooding is spread across hundreds of square miles that have been blackened by fire.
Officials say charred lands are more susceptible to sediment, dead trees and debris washing off into streams and rivers.
