El Paso – A New York Times reporter who interviewed an ex-CIA operative about masterminding bombings in Cuba in 1997 is set to testify Wednesday at the ex-agent's perjury trial in Texas.
Ann Louise Bardach has been fighting subpoenas for years. She says her testimony will make newsmakers less likely to talk to reporters.
Prosecutors say her testimony is needed to help link Luis Posada Carriles to the bombings. Posada is accused of lying during immigration hearings about his role in the attacks.
Bardach interviewed Posada in 1998 while he was in hiding in Aruba. He later sneaked into the U.S.
The 83-year-old Posada was born in Cuba and worked for the CIA until 1976. He spent years crisscrossing Latin America as a Cold Warrior backed by the U.S. government.
