Juan Carlos Llorca, the El Paso correspondent for The Associated Press and a veteran reporter in his native Guatemala, has died. He was 40.
Llorca's sister, Maria Jimena Llorca, says her brother collapsed at his home Monday. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is pending.
While a political writer for El Periodico de Guatemala newspaper, Llorca was selected for a Scripps Howard Foundation journalism fellowship in Washington, D.C., in 2002.
He joined the AP in 2005 in Guatemala, where his reporting on illegal international adoptions helped prompt national reforms. In 2010, Llorca was named AP's correspondent in El Paso, where he covered Mexico's drug war, immigration and other issues.
Llorca's two teenage sons had recently joined him in El Paso.
