Trial In Texas Seeks Registration Of Cloned Horses

A jury has heard about breeding and technology in opening statements of a Texas trial on whether the American Quarter Horse Association should accept cloned animals.

A 10-person jury was seated Wednesday morning in Amarillo. Testimony is expected Wednesday afternoon in the 2012 lawsuit filed by two breeders who own cloned quarter horses or offspring and want the animals registered.

AQHA has denied antitrust allegations and says its rules promote competition.

An attorney for the quarter horse raisers told jurors that other breeding technology has been allowed by the AQHA. Nancy Stone says since 1960 the AQHA has "progressively, repeatedly, consistently and without exception" accepted other breeding technology.

Association lawyer Wade Arnold says to have a horse registered the animal must have a mother and a father.
