Two Former El Paso ISD Officials Sentenced

Two former West Texas school district trustees have been sentenced to federal prison for their role in a public corruption scheme set to steer the district's medical insurance contracts to a vendor.

Charles Garcia had pleaded guilty last year to mail fraud, while Raymundo Rodriguez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud. U.S. District Judge Frank Montalvo sentenced Garcia in El Paso on Monday to seven months in prison, while Rodriguez got a four-month term. Both will pay $20,000 fines and $5,575 in restitution.

The El Paso Times reports sentencing is postponed until November for Frank Apodaca, who's recovering from a brain injury. The former CEO of the vendor benefiting from the contract pleaded guilty to racketeering and bribing county commissioners and trustees for three school districts.
