Two Get Prison For Trying To Smuggle Grenades Into Mexico

Two people in South Texas have been sentenced to prison for trying to smuggle three-dozen grenades into Mexico.

Prosecutors in Del Rio say the scheme was exposed last August when 28-year-old Juliette Ramirez was found with a grenade in her backpack at a Texas border crossing.

The arrest of the pedestrian led to an apartment in Del Rio. Officers discovered 35 more grenades and arrested 28-year-old Noe Ramirez. The woman and man are not related.

Juliette Ramirez pleaded guilty in November to exportation of a military-grade sub-munition and was sentenced Thursday to five years in a U.S. prison. Noe Ramirez pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the exportation of a military-grade sub-munition. He received eight years in prison.

Investigators say the duo plotted to smuggle grenades to Acuna, Mexico.
