Commentary: WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Tom Udall, cosponsor of a resolution authored by Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) marking February as Black History Month, released the following statement honoring the contributions of African Americans in New Mexico and across the nation:
“Each February, we celebrate the immeasurable and indelible contributions that African Americans have made to our state and our nation. In the face of relentless oppression and centuries of discrimination, black people have persevered and pressed on — bringing this country closer to its founding ideals, and enriching our culture, our communities, and our values. At each moment in America’s history, African Americans have overcome seemingly impossible hurdles to make our nation stronger and to build a better future for our children and our grandchildren.
“During Black History Month, we affirm that black lives matter. We recognize the incredible accomplishments of African American scientists, artists, service members, business people, public servants and others who have helped weave the fabric of our nation and move us forward. And as we do so, we must also confront the worst chapters of our history – and we must acknowledge the many ways in which our society continues to undermine and erode the dream of equality and justice for all, long after slavery and Jim Crow. Too many communities across our state and our nation still face systemic obstacles that put good jobs, fair treatment in the justice system, and equal access to the ballot box all out of reach.
"This Black History Month, let us recognize our common humanity and strive to overcome the forces in our politics who seek to tear us apart. As former President Barack Obama said in his farewell address to the nation, 'regardless of the station we occupy; we have to try harder; to start with the premise that each of our fellow citizens loves this country just as much as we do; that they value hard work and family like we do; that their children are just as curious and hopeful and worthy of love as our own.' In New Mexico, we know that our diversity is our strength. Let us work to honor that truth by rising above the most destructive and divisive voices in this country, and working together to build a more perfect union for all Americans.”
