University of Iowa professor, multicultural scholar to present at NMSU symposium

An educational psychology professor from the University of Iowa will be the keynote speaker at the 20th annual Multicultural Research Symposium at New Mexico State University.

The symposium is hosted by the NMSU College of Education’s Counseling & Educational Psychology Department, and will take place from4:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 28 at O’Donnell Hall Room 111.

The keynote address will be delivered by University of Iowa professor William Ming Liu, who will speak about the impact of economic inequality on the psychosocial functioning of communities of color. Specifically, he will describe the function of economic privilege and how this type of privilege is unlike racial or gendered privilege.

“We’re excited to have Dr. Liu provide a nuanced theory of classism as it is a type of diversity that often is reported only as income demographic by mental health providers,” said Eve Adams, professor in NMSU’s Counseling & Educational Psychology Department and symposium organizer.

Liu is a former student of NMSU College of Education Dean Donald Pope-Davis and a national multicultural scholar known for his work on classism and men and masculinity. Pope-Davis himself was a keynote speaker at the symposium about 10 years ago, Adams said.

Adams said symposium participants will learn about how social factors such as income inequality become consequential and meaningful psychological factors of distress, the research on social class and classism in psychology, and the relationship of economic privilege and classism.

“The Multicultural Research Symposium has been an area of distinction for the CEP Department because it showcases the department’s commitment to engaging in research on a variety of diversity issues,” Adams said. “This commitment is one of the reasons we attract doctoral students from all over the country who want to learn how to produce high quality multicultural research.”

Continuing Education Credit will be provided by the Southwestern Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy (SIAP) to local health care providers who attend. SIAP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The symposium is co-sponsored by the College of Education Dean’s Office and a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The symposium will also include doctoral student presentations, student poster presentations and a reception.
